Some would argue that any given vote is meaningless. However, in this post-Citizens United world, your vote can actually be ascribed an impressive financial value, by way of the millions upon millions of dollars spent by those in power trying to influence your decision. This is especially true across America's 'swing states' which have be deluged with a torrent of political advertisements and the like. We here in Delaware are only now getting a taste of the breadth of this assault via our proximity to suddenly in-play Pennsylvania.

I have a confession to make. As a Delawarean, I am unfortunately among the majority of Americans whose votes for President seemingly lack meaning. My vote for President Obama, in the solidly blue home state of Vice President Joe Biden, will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the electoral college. Similarly, a Texan of either political sway is not, at least in the short term, going to turn that state purple or blue. For this reason, I am ever so tempted to put my vote for President behind any one of the third party candidates. I'm tempted to look into them deeply, and make an informed decision amongst them, in an effort to make my gosh-darned vote count for something amongst this electoral sea of blue surrounding me.

I can't do this for one simple reason. I'm proud to vote for President Obama.

Over three and three-quarters years, he has provided the steady and principled leadership that this country so desperately needs moving forward. He's made mistakes, and he's not been perfect. But he's performed his job with poise and grace, and he has shown that he can be trusted at the helm.

+++

Sound bites only go so far. But they don't get particularly better than 'Bin Laden is dead. GM is alive.' President Obama has moved the country on a number of issues, in the face of stiff opposition at almost every turn.

The Affordable Care Act, whether you are a fan or not, is an active attempt to help Americans avoid and mitigate what is today the number one cause of bankruptcy in this country: health care issues and expenses. The bill arose out of a good old fashioned bi-partisan squabble, and achieved success only through the work of widely respected Republicans like Olympia Snowe and Arlen Specter, and was ostensibly upheld in the Supreme Court by Conservative Super Justice John Roberts. Don't believe it arose out of bi-partisan work and squabbling? Go back and re-live those months prior to the bill's passage. But this time, pay attention. Were this bill the picture of what Obama and the Democrats had initially envisioned, we'd all finally be getting those medical screenings we'd been putting off, all the while hailing Comrade Pelosi and Chairman Obama while muttering under our breath.

Obama has transformed our military's approach to prosecuting terrorism. He has shown courage and aplomb, to a surprising degree. The Bin Laden raid was one thing, but as we transition out of Afghanistan, he has shown an impressive willingness to bomb the shit out of Pakistan without their leaders blinking so much as a proverbial eye. This is exaggeration of course, and we cannot by any means carry this drone war out without end. But we are getting away with it, so far, because we are doing what we should have been doing from the beginning of this endless war. That is, we are tracking terrorists where they go, and targeting them with extreme force. Yes, we have killed countless innocents. Yes, that thought makes me sick to my stomach. But consider this - since 2008, upwards of 3000 people have been killed by American drone strikes in Pakistan. By our estimates, over 80% of those killed were militants. Compare these numbers to the deaths of Americans in Iraq or Afghanistan, not to mention the well over 100,000 civilians that have died during hostilities in Iraq. President Obama is consistently moving this war on terrorism in the direction it needs to go.

In the area of diplomacy, we have isolated Iran as never before, via sanctions approved by China and Russia. We've had a mixed record regarding the Arab spring, but we've at least managed to navigate those insane waters without putting any American soldiers on the ground. Of course, the Benghazi attack is a black mark on the President's record, and facts may surface which make this either more or less true than either side is hoping. But overall America has widely left Iraq, plans on leaving Afghanistan, and has yet to initiate any further extended hostilities in the region. We've done this without losing our edge militarily, and without taking the threat of assured annihilation off the table.

Facing an unprecedented financial catastrophe as he entered Office, President Obama has taken controversial steps to stave off the economic collapse we faced, and get the economy moving in the right direction. No one agrees with every step taken, from Bush's last minute bailout to the Stimulus to the Affordable Care Act to new regulations on banks and lenders. There is a little something to offend everyone in there. But the country is back on a positive track, despite continued global economic turmoil. Again, the President's actions weren't perfect, but they were courageous and based in principle, and have led to quantifiable results.

Under President Obama's leadership, we have seen the end of Don't Ask / Don't Tell, brought forth with the support and encouragement of the military's top brass, with seemingly no issues integrating the new policy of openness.

He has championed women's rights, signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act and placing two women on the Supreme Court.

We have a President who supports equal rights for all citizens.

+++

The often heard argument that Democrats and Republicans are exactly the same simply does not work in this election. There are stark differences between these two individuals, and even starker differences in the ideologies of the parties they lead. Unfortunately, these differences are highlighted most through the extreme positions taken up by the Republican party. These positions, on women's health issues, gay rights, voter enfranchisement, the environment, bank regulation, and so many more, make it impossible for me personally to support the party or consider its leaders as viable options. This is disappointing to me. I am also disappointed in the leadership of the Republican party, for working so hard over Obama's first term to thwart his initiatives at all costs in the spirit of political gamesmanship.

There is always a difference between the candidates of major parties, no matter how closely their politics may align. This is evident in the measure of the man. Attitude and style matter, as does grit and grittiness - an ability to see yourself and the job at hand in the broader context of history, while at the same time not getting carried away with yourself. These men are very different, with different leadership styles and different teams working behind the scenes. One of them will hold the nuclear codes and select the next one or two Supreme Court Justices.

+++

While Mitt Romney's running mate has been the poster boy for Tea Party Ethics and Randian absurdities, Mitt Romney is no such ideologue. In fact, if you hold a particular position on an issue, and you believe in it dearly, chances are that at some point Mitt Romney has agreed with you in order to get your vote. Unfortunately, this is the case no matter which side of the issue you may fall. He has shown himself, time and again, to operate with zero integrity with regard to taking and standing by a position. He has already disavowed much of what he said only six months ago, including his desire to "Absolutely" strip funding from FEMA, his desire for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage, his bellicosity towards Russia and Iran, and a number of other issues as evidenced through all three debates. Mr. Romney has managed to at some point be on opposing sides of almost every single issue relevant to this election. He has shown little integrity on the campaign trail over the past eight years, and makes no indication that this will change were he put in office.

+++

I don't agree with everything Barack Obama has done as President. I have ideological differences with the man, as well as practical frustrations and concerns. But there is only one direction this country can move in. We must continue on a path towards greater civil equality. We must elect leaders who are stoic, thoughtful, and principled. Barack Obama has widely served that role well over his first term. He has performed with dignity and pragmatism, and he has earned my vote. His opponent offers no viable alternative.

<br Oh dear, dear stupid Ben Weasel…

Punk Rock has over the past forty years or so served on opposite sides of the great divide of the thrust of progress. That is, one can find in punk all manner of thought, ideology and action. Each genre of punk tends to align somewhat with the overarching ideologies of its adherents, but that is a loose connection.
<img Skate Punk, Street Punk, Melodic hardcore, Pop punk, Riot Grrl, Rock Against Communism, Konsrock, J-Ska, Bandana thrash, Gunk, Punk Pathetique, New Wave, No Wave, Grebo, Garage, Taqwacore, and Trallpunk.

These tend to be woven together by the common threads of a sense that authorities should generally be questioned strickly, and music should largely be played on some scale as to be considered at least somewhat fast and aggressive. A matter of scale in all cases, but this should encompass roughly everyone in the scene.

Each of these insanely specific genres listed above has within its group of listeners men, women, children, et al and each individual person brings to the collective a tiny slice of their mentality to make up what ends up constituting the general scaffold of an image of what that particular brand of music ‘is’ and ‘means’. In this way, and in so many other ways, the relationship between musician and listener is symbiotic and duel-dependent.

So it’s not really appropriate to paint with broad strokes, even when those strokes probably wouldn’t actually fall too far outside the lines. You could say things like ‘hardcore kids like to fight, are more aggressive, and perhaps, more likely to be a bit misogynistic.’ This of course would be completely unfair. Some hardcore kids fall under this umbrella, while others are probably Rhodes Scholars. Some may be Rhodes Scholars who also happen to hate women. It takes all kinds.

Punk Rock’s relationship to the internet is similarly ambiguous. Some folk took right too it and used it in the early days in ways that were revolutionary and groundbreaking, and served as a template for Internet 2.0 in many ways. Other folk detract it to this day, viewing it as an ominous specter of a dystopian future void of privacy or human interaction.

Some bands have used the net to thrive, while others had to be dragged in kicking and screaming. The net is so synonymous with music today that to have a band but not a website is a diagnosable symptom of insanity.

In the middle of all of this over the past 25 years was Screeching Weasel. Screeching Weasel stood across these great divides, drawing a stark line in the sand, dividing the different worlds of punk and pop-punk with their arrogant, aggressive Ramones-core sounds, goofy, at times semi-mean lyrics, and a brazen regard for black leather jackets and Mosrite guitars.

Ben Weasel has long been a lightning rod in the punk community, spurned on by his extravagant columns in MaximumRockandRoll and his penchant for Making Friends and Irritating People. Is Ben a fuck? I dunno, never met the guy. But if I had to take a guess, I’d say no, he’s probably an alright dude. That being said, my man Ben has done a good job of creating the idea out there in the world that he’s a bit of an asshole. And that’s OK.

So in the course of like 3 weeks, the roof’s been ripped off the whole thing. This all starts with the official streaming and subsequent unofficial leaking of the new Screeching Weasel record. Let’s focus for a minute on that.

God damn! Like I said above, in these days of disparate sounds and ways of thinking, it is super difficult to ‘define’ anything. On a broader scale, for instance, what would one characterize as ‘dance’ music today? You could run the gamut from Gaga to Atom & His Package to Abba. Similarly disparity reigns.

To that end, as Phil Donahue so famously asked the Mr. T Experience… what is punk? Furthermore, today, WHAT the FUCK is pop-punk? You could grab 27 pop punk teenagers from the mall and ask ‘em their favorite pop punk band, and you’d get 27 different answers, no doubt ranging from The Queers & MTX to Pennywise & NOFX to god only knows amongst the extensive list of abhorrent drivel that exists within the genre today, as well as the few spectacular roses rises from amongst the shit. I listened to The Queers, MTX, & Screeching Weasel, but not so much NOFX or Pennywise. My friends who listened to those bands were less likely to listen to MTX or the Queers, but they did listen to Screeching Weasel. Hmmm.
<img src="http://lukephillips.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/1276_1212089037.jpg?w=300&h=199" border="0" alt="" what is punk? What is pop-punk? I’d pretty much have to hand you the new Screeching Weasel record and walk away. It’s kind of awesome. And it plays right into my point. There are some amazing songs on the record, and there are some stinkers. But I have seen people agree on this point, only to then characterize the other’s favorites as the stinkers. So even the bad songs are pretty great, and you’ll probably love the jams I think are only so-so.

This is SW’s first record in eleven years, and it is their best since 1994’s How to Make Enemies and Irritate People. It’s really good. And no one is ever going to hear it.

If you don’t know by now, Screeching Weasel is, at least in the short term, kaput.

After the awful and unfortunate events that took place at SXSW last week, in which Ben Weasel totally lost his cool and did some very uncool things, the other members of the band have unanimously left the band. Ouch.

The whole thing breaks down like its own little SW song.

Poor dumb Ben got himself in way deeper than he could have imagined, and to be fair, he’s in way deeper than probably deserved. I in no way advocate violence towards women. But this incident raises interesting questions regarding women’s progress towards equality within punk and in the greater world.

I have heard more than one person, including women, make the case that if the girl deserved to get punched, she deserved to get punched. I don’t necessarily accept this premise, but it must be addressed that this incident was not one-sided. The poor guy is up there trying to do his thing, despite his acknowledged social phobias, getting pelted with ice and no doubt other random bullshit. Then this girl, after admitting to throwing the ice, spits beer in Mr. Weasel’s face.

I think it is a good time to reiterate that violence towards anyone, especially women, is to be avoided at all cost.

But have you ever been spit on?

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GRmLoIsGq2A" frameborder="0" worst moment. Maybe you were drunk and causing a ruckus. Maybe you got frustrated in line at the WalMart and cussed out an old lady. Now, imagine, as you collect yourself from losing your cool, you look up to see thirty kids with video cameras live streaming that shit to the internet.

Everyone knows Ben Weasel is an asshole. Again, it’s kind of his thing. Had this incident occurred ten or twenty years ago, it would have percolated through the scene via accounts in MaxRock or early versions of the Pop Punk Message board. It would be an issue, but it would be filtered enough that Ben and the band could likely get through it if they so chose.

However, it is not 1994. Everyone has a pretty good video camera in their pocket, and for chrissake, you’re standing on a stage with a band, so you are going to be a target of attention.

So when you lash out violently at a woman in front of 500 people, and then you turn and punch a second women in the ribs as she tries to subdue you, it’s gonna be available for everyone in the world to see via the internet.

It needs to be said that what that girl did was not cool. Fucking with a band while they are playing isn’t a big deal, but it’s stupid and can certainly become frustrating for the band, who are trying to focus on their performance.

Secondly, I hope, and I pray, that Ben mistakenly punched the second girl thinking she was a man (because she came up from behind like a bouncer). Then again, this is giving Ben the benefit of the doubt significantly, considering he had literally just punched a different girl, thereby indicating that ‘not punching girls’ was not something he was particularly focused on at the moment.

Still, it also should be mentioned that the second girl wasn’t too bright either, in that the first rule of fight and crowd management is Mr. Lee took the mound for the Phillies days later, pitching six innings of no hit ball on his way to a complete game win. This performance set the bar high for Cliff, who took the momentum and carried it straight into the postseason, where he went 2-0 in the World Series, becoming the first pitcher in history to pitch a complete game in the Series with 10 strikeouts, no walks, and no earned runs. His two wins were the only two wins for his team in the World Series, who went on to lose the Series in 6 games.

Lee's no-nonsense, cavalier attitude, coupled with his take-no-prisoners approach to pitching and his notorious hustle to and from the dugout between innings quickly earned him the moniker of 'fan-favorite' in a town oft-bedeviled for their harsh treatment of players on both sides of the aisle. Lee's composure was evident through the season. He embraced the city, and Philadelphia fully embraced him.

When the Lee deal went down, it was universally regarded as a stroke of utter genius on the part of GM Ruben Amaro Jr. All indications pointed to a deal being done to obtain Roy Halladay, widely regarded as the best in baseball (with Cliff Lee coming in close second). Everyone wanted Halladay, and Amaro was on that boat. However, the Blue jays insisted on scoring Phil's top pitching prospect Kyle "son of Doug" Drabek in the deal, along with other potential aces like J.A. Happ and others. The Phillies were unwilling to jeopardize their future in this regard, especially considering that Halladay would be a wide open free agent only a season and a half later, at the end of 2010.

So Amaro called the Blue Jay bluff and walked away from the table, unwilling to toss away the future for one man. Mr. Lee earned his Phillies pinstripes, but burning a hole in the back of everyone's minds (especially the Phil's front office) was the fact that Cliff Lee's contract expires at the end of next season, and despite his expressed love of the city and team, this had to be weighed against his stated desire to score BIG money on the free agent market, vis a vis CC Sabathia.

The Phillies faced a worst case scenario. Come the end of the 2010 season, they could be without their man Lee, out of the game in a Halladay bidding war, and facing the doldrums of a moderately (though not extensively) depleted farm system. Of course, Lee could res-sign. But money talks, and initial indications implied Lee would be willing to walk for the right number, which is well within his rights as a premiere player.

In the face of this, the Phillies acted boldly. We all know what happened over the past week. Historic trade. Nine players. Two Cy Youngers. et al.

The Phillies have brilliantly locked in Roy Halladay, the "best pitcher in baseball", through at least the 2013 season. In doing so, they were forced to heavily deplete the deep bench, trading away dreamy Kyle Drabek in a package of three minor leaguers. Interestingly, the Phillies were able to pull this off without touching Lee at all. In this way, it is interesting that this is being characterized as a four team, nine player deal. In reality they are almost all separate deals.

The need (or desire) to trade Lee arose because of the stark pain that trading such potential gems as Drabek and outfielder Michael Taylor exacts on the Phillies future. Even with Halladay, the Phils could have held onto Lee and acquiesced the loss of money and prospects for one year of beautiful greatness where your top three starters are Halladay, Lee, and Hamels. This is in part likely why they were out there shopping Blanton somewhat earlier in the week, and whoever else they could throw into a deal to get some equity.

In the end, I suppose, no such deal was attainable. No one bit hard enough on Blanton et al. Additionally, one could make the argument that two years of Blanton is better than one year of Lee, and also that we could always deal Blanton in the future for additional prospects or help.

I wonder as well if they were also considering the development of Cole "Chinadoll" Hamels in the equation. Being unable to trade him for a solid deal, they likely still see him as the future of the team, a player who had an off year but will come back strong and confident. But with him in a Phils uniform, at the #3 spot, could deal a harsh blow to his occasionally tender psyche. Probably not.

But this BEGS the question. Exactly WHAT is the Phillies' projected 5 man rotation going into Spring Training??? Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Happ, Kendrick? That is pretty strong. But I almost feel, that for next year, we have weakened ourselves: a.) because a five man rotae with Halladay and Lee is unfathomable and also b.) b/c previous to these trades, our 'wild card' potential sixth man seemed to be the Young Drabek, at some point in the season when injury or performance begs a change.
